History of Bodrum Castle

The Castle of St. Peter the Liberator of the Order of the Knights of the Hospital of St. John of Rhodes – to give it its full, comprehensive title – is Bodrum celebrated landmark. served over a period of six centuries as a garrison, has a compound encloses a small village, and also as a fortress prison. Today it houses one of the finest museums of nautical archeology in the world.
The castle is situated on a promontory, which was, according to Herodotus, a small island called Zephyria at the time of the first Dorian invasions which occurred built around the time of the Trojan war. By the time of King Mausolus (377-353 BC) came to rule Caria and moved the capital from Mylasa to Halicarnassus, now Bodrum, Zephyrion already a small peninsula connected to the mainland by debris and landfills. This peninsula is believed that the position of Mausolos palace near an early classical temple of Apollo built, although some authorities to the presumed location of the palace on the mainland north of the peninsula preferred location. The highly strategic nature of the promontory strongly supports the view that it is actually gone to the site of the palace or castle, but unfortunately there is no firm evidence for this in ancient sources and all possible traces of long.

The destruction of a building on the headland to the early era – if you were – occurred when the city of the Macedonian army of Alexander the Great conquered, or may have in the Arab raids in the second half of the seventh century n . Christ, as Rhodes and Kos were overrun, although Halicarnassus is not specifically mentioned in their conquests. A structure may also fallen victim to an earthquake.

The history is a record, however, and our own eyes witness today that a medieval castle was built on a small rocky peninsula, built on the east side of Bodrum harbor and records show that this castle from a company of men known collectively as the Knights built the Hospital of St. John of Rhodes. Who were these men? When, why and how did they build the castle?
