Turkey, stretching from the Balkans to the border with Syria, Iran, Iraq and southern Caucasus republics, is a bridge between Europe and the Middle East and Asia. The Turkish Republic was declared in 1923, rising from the ashes of the Ottoman Empire. Turkey is a secular Republic with a democratic parliamentary system of government, a founding member of the United Nations, NATO member and candidate for accession to the EU (European Union). The country’s population approaches 75 million and an area of 779,452 km2, is almost equal to all the territories of the United Kingdom and France.
The Aegean region of Turkey is the most fertile area of the country’s cotton, corn, vegetables, tobacco, olives, oranges, tangerines, grapes, figs, lemons and other fruits. The region also contains many sites of antiquity, including 3 of the seven wonders of the ancient world and the 7 churches of Asia Minor addressed by St. John in the Apocalypse.
Bodrum is a charming little port and fascinating, 270 km. south of Izmir on the Aegean coast of Turkey. Located on the southern coast of the Bodrum Peninsula, opposite the Greek island of Kos and at one point that controls the entry into the Gulf of Gokova. The center of an administrative district, Bodrum, has a permanent population of about 30,000 and is located at the site of the ancient city of Halicarnassus, once the capital of the kingdom of Caria. Located in the southwest corner of the Aegean region of Turkey, Bodrum is a major tourist attraction because of its beautiful coastline, excellent weather and a lot of places close to the historical and natural beauty.
